Event: Mentor-Protege Roundtable And Book Signing, Hosted By MAGIC

I am pleased to announce that I will be joining the Mid-America Government Industry Coalition for a roundtable on federal mentor-protege programs on March 26-27, 2013 in Midwest City, Oklahoma.

Each program attendee will receive an autographed copy of my book, The Small-Business Guide to Government Contracts.  (If you already have a copy, here’s your chance to pick up gift for that special government contractor in your life).  The program will offer lots of important information on federal mentor-protege programs and invaluable networking opportunities–you don’t want to miss it.

If you are a government contractor in the Midwest, you owe it to yourself to attend a MAGIC event and see what this great organization can do for you.  For more information on the March 2013 mentor-protege event, click over to the event’s page on the MAGIC website.

See you in Oklahoma!

Thank You, HUBZones!

Last week, I had the honor of returning to Washington, DC and giving a presentation at the National HUBZone Conference on best practices for remaining HUBZone compliant.  The presentation addressed critical ongoing HUBZone compliance issues, including the principal office rule, 35% employee residency rule, and other HUBZone eligibility rules.

Many thanks to Mark Crowley and the HUBZone Council for inviting me to be part of the conference.  And a big “thank you” to my engaged audience of HUBZone companies, which asked many great questions and probably could have kept going all morning if there had been time.  Finally, thanks to my sister Karen, for allowing me to use her apartment in Van Ness as my personal HUBZone Conference hotel and introducing me to Comet Ping Pong while I was in town.

If your company is HUBZone certified, but you weren’t able to make it to this year’s National HUBZone Conference, never fear.  My presentation slides are now up on the Past Presentations page.  Enjoy!

Thank You, El Paso!

I had the pleasure last week of speaking at the 7th Annual Veterans Business Conference in El Paso, Texas.  It was my first trip to El Paso (and my first time at this conference) and it was well worth the travel.

A big “thank you” to Joseph Conway and his team for inviting me to speak at the event–and for putting together a well-organized and well-run day packed with valuable information for veteran-owned contractors.  If you are a veteran-owned contractor in Texas or the surrounding area, you owe it to yourself to check out what is sure to be an excellent 8th annual veterans business conference next year.

In the meantime, if you were not able to attend this year’s event, Mr. Conway graciously gave his permission to post my presentation on service-disabled veteran-owned small business teaming, joint venturing, and subcontracting here on SmallGovCon.  Just click the link and enjoy!

Event: 51st Annual National Seminar on Government Contracts

I am excited to announce that I will be speaking at the 51st Annual National Seminar on Government Contracts in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.  My program will provide an overview of the federal government’s small business contracting programs, and is entitled, “Small Business Contracting: What You Need to Know About the ‘Other’ 23 Percent of Federal Prime Contracts.”

As a native of Grand Forks, North Dakota–about a stone’s throw from the Minnesota border–the Twin Cities were the closest large American metropolitan area (among bigger cities generally, Winnipeg is closer).  I grew up hearing Twins games on the radio and suffering through some epic Vikings playoff meltdowns.  As an adult, I’ve come to know the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport very well in stopovers to visit my family.  Suffice it to say, I am looking forward to this trip, and not just for the great government contracting programs.

Speaking of great programs, the National Seminar features an all-star lineup of sessions given by government and industry leaders.  You can check out the program on the National Seminar on Government Contracts website.  I hope to see you there!

New SmallGovCon Features: Upcoming Events and Past Presentations

Despite what you might think if you read SmallGovCon regularly, blogging is not my favorite way of communicating information about legal developments in the world of government contracting (although I do love blogging!)

Hands-down, I prefer getting out and meeting contractors and others in the industry, face-to-face.  That is why I travel around the country, speaking at industry days, conferences, and conventions.  In the past year alone, I have spoken at events from Annapolis to Seattle (and many places in between) and I have several more events on tap in the months to come.

To help readers keep up with my speaking schedule, I am pleased to announce that SmallGovCon now features an Upcoming Events page.  On this page, you can see where, when, and on what topic I will be speaking.  If I will be in your area, please do not hesitate to contact me in advance and we can arrange to get a cup of coffee, or sit down for a more formal meeting.

Now, I understand that unlike the Grateful Dead, I do not have legions of fans following me around the country.  So if you will not be able to attend one of my events, you can now view slides from the event after it occurs on the SmallGovCon Past Presentations page (assuming permission is granted by the event sponsor).

Please enjoy the new SmallGovCon features, and I hope to see you at an industry event soon.

Event: SDVOSB Joint Venturing, Teaming and Subcontracting (El Paso, TX)

I am excited to announce that I will be speaking on “SDVOSB Teaming, Joint Venturing, and Subcontracting” at the 7th Annual Veterans Business Conference in El Paso, Texas.  The conference will be held August 15, 2012 at the Wyndham Airport Hotel.

Joint venturing and teaming can make a SDVOSB more competitive, but can also be complex and risky.  In this presentation, I will demystify the SDVOSB teaming process.  For SDVOSB prime contractors, I will explain how to put together strong and effective joint venture agreements, teaming agreements and subcontracts, avoid common compliance mistakes, and deal with the day-to-day challenges of managing a relationship with a large subcontractor.  And for SDVOSB subcontractors, I will discuss how to negotiate a better deal with a large prime contractor and earn a reputation as the first company a large prime calls when it needs a SDVOSB subcontractor.

In addition to speaking, I will be on the trade show floor at the Petefish, Immel, Heeb & Hird, LLP booth, where I will answer attendees’ questions and sign copies of my book, The Small-Business Guide to Government Contracts.

Many thanks to Joseph Conway and the El Paso Contract Opportunities Center for inviting me to be a part of this great event.  For more information, visit the El Paso Contract Opportunities Center website.
