Event: APTAC Spring Conference

I am excited to announce that I will be presenting at the Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers Spring Conference in Atlanta.

The presentation will focus on recent changes enacted in the National Defense Authorization Act, including changes to subcontracting limits, the Women-Owned Small Business Program, federal mentor-protege programs, and more.  I will also discuss other changes on the horizon in 2013.

The presentation will be given on Monday, April 22, 2013.  Attendance is limited ATPAC members.  For more information, contact APTAC.

Introducing SmallGovCon Guest Perspectives

As we begin a new year with important legal ramifications for small businesses, I am pleased to introduce a new SmallGovCon series offering viewpoints on those legal issues from thought leaders throughout the government contracting community.

The new feature, Guest Perspectives, kicks off today with a guest post by Kevin J. Allis, the director of the Native American Contractors Association.  The post, titled “Section 811 Stifles Native American Growth,” is well worth a read.

A New Addition To The SmallGovCon Family

SmallGovCon will be on a short hiatus while Anne and I welcome Ryan Christopher Koprince to our family.

Ryan was born at 4:07 this afternoon.  At birth, Ryan was 7 pounds, 15 ounces–a beautiful and healthy baby boy.

Ryan and his mother are resting comfortably.  Ryan’s proud and happy father will return to his usual mix of GAO, SBA and other government contracting blogging in the near future.

Event: Mentor-Protege Roundtable And Book Signing, Hosted By MAGIC

I am pleased to announce that I will be joining the Mid-America Government Industry Coalition for a roundtable on federal mentor-protege programs on March 26-27, 2013 in Midwest City, Oklahoma.

Each program attendee will receive an autographed copy of my book, The Small-Business Guide to Government Contracts.  (If you already have a copy, here’s your chance to pick up gift for that special government contractor in your life).  The program will offer lots of important information on federal mentor-protege programs and invaluable networking opportunities–you don’t want to miss it.

Thank You, HUBZones!

Last week, I had the honor of returning to Washington, DC and giving a presentation at the National HUBZone Conference on best practices for remaining HUBZone compliant.  The presentation addressed critical ongoing HUBZone compliance issues, including the principal office rule, 35% employee residency rule, and other HUBZone eligibility rules.

Many thanks to Mark Crowley and the HUBZone Council for inviting me to be part of the conference.  And a big “thank you” to my engaged audience of HUBZone companies, which asked many great questions and probably could have kept going all morning if there had been time.  Finally, thanks to my sister Karen, for allowing me to use her apartment in Van Ness as my personal HUBZone Conference hotel and introducing me to Comet Ping Pong while I was in town.

If your company is HUBZone certified, but you weren’t able to make it to this year’s National HUBZone Conference, never fear.  My presentation slides are now up on the Past Presentations page.  Enjoy!

Thank You, El Paso!

I had the pleasure last week of speaking at the 7th Annual Veterans Business Conference in El Paso, Texas.  It was my first trip to El Paso (and my first time at this conference) and it was well worth the travel.

A big “thank you” to Joseph Conway and his team for inviting me to speak at the event–and for putting together a well-organized and well-run day packed with valuable information for veteran-owned contractors.  If you are a veteran-owned contractor in Texas or the surrounding area, you owe it to yourself to check out what is sure to be an excellent 8th annual veterans business conference next year.

Event: 51st Annual National Seminar on Government Contracts

I am excited to announce that I will be speaking at the 51st Annual National Seminar on Government Contracts in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.  My program will provide an overview of the federal government’s small business contracting programs, and is entitled, “Small Business Contracting: What You Need to Know About the ‘Other’ 23 Percent of Federal Prime Contracts.”

As a native of Grand Forks, North Dakota–about a stone’s throw from the Minnesota border–the Twin Cities were the closest large American metropolitan area (among bigger cities generally, Winnipeg is closer).  I grew up hearing Twins games on the radio and suffering through some epic Vikings playoff meltdowns.  As an adult, I’ve come to know the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport very well in stopovers to visit my family.  Suffice it to say, I am looking forward to this trip, and not just for the great government contracting programs.
