Event: GovCon Legal Update in Washington, DC

As a rare Midwestern government contracts attorney, I am often asked, “when are you next coming to DC?”  Well, now I have an answer.  I am pleased to announce that I will be presenting a workshop entitled “Government Contracts Legal Update 2014” at the Small Business Leadership Development  Conference on March 18.

My workshop will cover recent developments and trends in government contracts law, with a special emphasis on legal developments affecting small businesses.  I will also be on hand throughout the day at the Petefish, Immel, Heeb & Hird booth to answer questions about the presentation and discuss other areas of government contracts law.

If you haven’t yet registered for the SBLD Conference, don’t miss out.  The event focuses on emerging and small business leaders, and includes networking, educational workshops, and matchmaking sessions.  Visit the SBLD Conference website to learn more.

See you March 18!

Thank You, Texas!

I am back in Lawrence after a trip to the Lone Star State, where I spoke at the Fort Bliss Regional Contracting Industry Day.  My presentation, “The Legal Benefits and Pitfalls of Teaming Arrangements” focused on the upsides and potential drawbacks of teaming and joint venturing on federal set-aside contracts.

A big “thank you” to Joe Conway and the team at the El Paso Community College Contract Opportunities Center for hosting this outstanding event.  And of course, extra thanks to all the government employees, large businesses, and small business owners who attended.

If you weren’t able to make it to the Fort Bliss Regional Contracting Industry Day, you don’t have to be left out.  Just contact me and I would be happy to provide you with a copy of the presentation.

Happy Holidays From SmallGovCon

With Christmas two days away and 2014 right around the corner, it’s time to enjoy the holidays, reflect on the year that was, and look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.

With that in mind, this will be the last SmallGovCon post of 2013.  I’ll be spending the holidays sharing in my two-year-old daughter’s excitement about Santa Claus and marveling at my one-year-old son’s sudden transformation into an adorable toddler with a penchant for pulling everything out of any closed drawer in sight.

SmallGovCon will be back in the New Year with much more legal news for government contractors.  (If you want to ring in the New Year by reading up on GAO decisions, SBA OHA appeals, or the nuances of the 2013 NDAA, my archives should have you covered).  Until then, best wishes for a wonderful and joyous holiday season.

Thank You, Southern California!

I am back in the Midwest after a trip to sunny Southern California, where I spoke at the 10th Annual Veteran Economic & Business Development Summit in Riverside.  My presentation, “Joint Ventures vs. Prime/Sub Teaming” covered the key legal distinctions between joint ventures and prime/sub teams, with a special focus on the SDVOSB joint venture rules.

A big “thank you” to Julie Padilla, Scott Rice, and the rest of the team from the Riverside Community College District Procurement Assistance Center, who put together an outstanding event.  And of course, extra thanks to the veterans and small business owners who attended (and asked some great questions).

If you were not able to make it to last Friday’s event, you don’t have to be left out.  Just contact me and I would be happy to provide you with a copy of my slides.

Free GovCon Books And Webinars: Celebrating One Year Of SmallGovCon

If it’s fall, it must be birthday season: my daughter recently turned two, my son is approaching one year old, and Father Time will come for me again on November 21.  SmallGovCon has passed its one-year mark, too, and we are celebrating with a free book and webinar giveaway (I figured my readers would prefer that to the pink bubble wands that were such a hit at my daughter’s party).

Here’s how it works: just click this link and tell us a little bit about yourself (after all, we can’t give you free stuff if we don’t know who you are).

In mid-October, we will randomly select six readers to receive free copies of The Small Business Guide to Government Contracts.  Two other readers will receive free one-hour webinars on government contracts legal topics near and dear to their hearts.

You don’t have to be a client of my law firm to enter–just a SmallGovCon reader.  So click the link and enter, and thank you for reading SmallGovCon!

Position To Win: Policies, Protests, And The Pursuit Of Opportunities

I am pleased to announce that I have joined with Guy Timberlake of the American Small Business Coalition and Larry Allen of Allen Federal Business Partners to produce a new Internet-based radio show called Position To Win: Policies, Protests and the Pursuit of Opportunities.

Every two weeks, Guy, Larry and I will offer our take on policy, legislative, and legal matters affecting small government contractors.  In today’s segment, Guy discussed small business set-aside contracting dollars, Larry weighed in on the potential small business impacts of the pre-award protests of the GSA OASIS vehicle, and I talked about the recent bill to move SDVOSB verification from the VA to the SBA.

Guy and Larry are two of the most knowledgeable voices in the industry, and I’m happy to join them on Position To Win.  I hope you’ll tune in.
